There is more than one reason for having trouble "surfing the net". Please try these solutions. If none of them work or instructions say "contact the Helpdesk" please click the following link Contact Technology Department's Helpdesk.
The network is not working
- Do a complete restart of your Chromebook: sign out and shut down, then turn on and sign in.
- Connect to a known working wireless network. If it doesn't connect, try disconnecting or forgetting, then re-connect.
- Click where the time is displayed on the task bar (also called the shelf).
- The network is not connected if you see an empty "cone" - the symbol for the network.
- Click where networks are listed. The network at the top is the one you're attempting to connect to. If none are listed add a network. If connecting from home be sure you know how to set it up.
- Browse to a known website, such as CNN.com or Weather.com.
- If still unable to browse take a picture of your screen and submit to us.
- Take a picture by pressing < Ctrl F5 >. The F5 function key, Show Screens, has this symbol:
- You will find the file created in your Google Drive in the DOWNLOADED FILES folder.
- The filename will be of the form Screenshot [date] at [time].png.
- Email this to ChromebookHelp@pccsk12.com. This will contact the Helpdesk.
Search engines are not setup properly
- At the top right next to your profile picture click the symbol, then Settings.
- Type search engine in the search bar at the top.
- Search engine used in the address bar will be listed first. Google is recommended to be first.
- Clicking on the right will show more websites.
- Below that is Manage search engines:
- The first section is Default search engines. All websites from Step 2b will be listed here.
- The next section is Other search engines. These are websites you have added.
- If one is known or thought to be a problem click the symbol, then click Remove from list.
- Sign out and shut down, then sign back in and see if your problem has disappeared. If not go to the next section
Can access other websites but cannot access Google Chrome apps - Google is blocked. To unblock:
- At the top right next to your profile picture click the symbol, then Settings
- Type Privacy and security in the search bar at the top
- Select Site settings
- Scroll down to Pop-ups and redirects and click it
- Look under Block to see if you have a Google address added
- If so, click on this symbol for that entry and select Remove
- If this does not work, go on to the next solution.
Still not able to browse to a website or Chromebook errors out with a warning a filter has blocked the site
The problem may be a result of what extensions and Chrome apps have been added.
Click User-Added Extensions and Applications to review them.
