In most cases where a Chromebook microphone and/or camera is not working, there is a setting that is not correct as opposed to a physical issue with the Chromebook itself. Before contacting your school's support team, please follow the following troubleshooting procedures.
Let's start by testing the microphone:
- Please go to mictests.com
- There will be a black and white box that appears to have static running in it
- Click on Test My Mic
- A small box may appear in the upper left asking for permission to access your microphone, if so, click Allow
- Start talking and making noise until the counter reaches 100% and you should see colorful sound waves
- Once the counter reaches 100%, click the play button
- If you can't hear anything, but see the colorful waves, that means your mic is working but your sound on the Chromebook is muted.
- If that is the case, click the settings on the Chromebook in the lower right corner (where the battery and WiFi symbols are) and unmute your sound by moving the slider to the right
Now let's test the camera by opening the camera app on the Chromebook
- At the bottom of your Chromebook there is a small open circle on the far left
- Click on that open circle and if you don't see a camera app, then start typing the word camera in the search box
- Your Camera App is now visible
- Click on the Camera App
- If your camera is working properly, you should see yourself on the screen
- To the far right, there are Photo, Video and Square Options
- Above the Video option, there is a circle with a red dot, click that and start recording
- When recording is complete, the recorded file appears in the lower left of the camera screen, click on it
- to open the gallery and playback your recorded video
- If you are able to do all of the above, your camera is working properly
If you need further assistance, please send us the results of these two test so that we know what course of action to take from here.
